F.A.T. Studios & Southwark Schools Project

In Spring 2023, Natalie teamed up with F.A.T. Studios to run a series of cyanotype workshops in 2 primary schools along Old Kent Road: Camelot and Coburg.

Working on behalf of Southwark Council, the workshops aimed to create a space in which children could talk about what matters to them in the local environment - and then create artwor about it.

Gathering objects from the local environment, the group printed cynaotypes using a UV lab set up at both schools. As always it was fascinating to work with children; they had comments about almost everything from the importance of boba tea, to making stands against racism, aquatic safety, trash, architecture, business plans, outdoor swimming spots, cat parks, equality, bus routes, and carnivals.

The full collection of around 60 cyanotype prints were then displayed at Straffordshire St as part of their summer Festival of Community. The display provided a great backdrop to the Project Market, ran by F.A.T. Studios as part of the festival. The children and their families were invited to come see their work on the gallery walls.

The project stood empower the young participant to use their voice and to speak up about how they feel about their local area.
